Elements, Principles, and Skills of the Druid Way

by Nicki Never

Basically speaking, there are nine elements to the disciplined mind of a Druid. This is not to say that you could not benefit from these in your everyday life, or whatever you spiritual path you follow. These nine are as follows:

  • Knowledge
  • Meditation
  • Service
  • Judgment and Discernment
  • Courage and Honor
  • Hospitality
  • Sacrifice
  • Humility
  • Serenity

All of these can be taken and interpreted as the one practicing wishes. For example, sacrifice can mean to truly give up the things in life that so many people find binding, and that hold them back; IE: money, and the entrapments that come along with it. In short, many Druids take these elements and process them into their own lives as they see fit and in the ways that best work for them.

When starting out, one of the first things that aspiring Druids learn are the three categories of skills for them to learn and process. First of these is the receiving and holding of knowledge past, present, and future. Many Druids in the old days did so without paper and pen. Nothing was allowed to be wrote down, and it all had to be memorized; hence the long time it took to become a third grade Druid.

Second was the regulation of daily life, including political, medical, scientific and legal learning. To be able to process and include all of these areas into your daily routine and practice them as well.

Last of all was the ability to communicate with the Gods through ritual sacrifice, in order to divine and influence future events. In olden times, it was said that the Druids sacrificed humans to the Gods in order to receive these guidance’s. As nothing was wrote down, we can neither agree or disagree. Needless to say, today’s Druids do not sacrifice humans, but rather find different ways and things to offer up the Gods to appease them.

Lastly are the areas of knowledge appropriate to succeeding in the Druid ways, and the nine steps to help you on your way to achieving the first grade of Druidism. You want to try to focus on the religious/spiritual system based on the paganism of ancient times. And always remember to pay respects/worship to The Dagda and Brigid. Your areas of knowledge should include; science; law; philosophy; psychology; and medicine. Druids of the past had three different paths they could choose, but you needed to learn a little from each path, because you never knew where your life would take you.

I leave you now with the nine steps to help put you on your way to ‘becoming’ a Druid.

  • Become environmentally aware
  • Read all you can
  • Meditate
  • Take responsibility for your life
  • Make contact with other aspiring Druids
  • Engage with the spiritual world
  • Let go of or cherished illusions
  • Become well rounded
  • Serve your clan

May Brigid Bless and Dagda guide your ways
