Astrology
by Lisa Headrick-Griffin
Astrology is the science of the stars. Using several charts, you can determine the
exact location of all eight planets, your ascendant, the Sun and the Moon (the Sun and
Moon are called luminaries in astrology) at the time of your birth. The combination of all
eleven of these factors makes up your astrological chart. Each chart occurs only once every
4,320,000 years and, while not always accurate, this chart can tell us a lot about our
personality from whom we are compatible with to what kind of career we would like the
most.
The three most significant factors in a birth chart are the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant
signs. The Sun is the most influential sign of the three, and some regard it as a
representation of your consciousness or, as Freud put it, your ego. It governs your
individuality, your unique style, and your determination to fulfill your goals in life. In a
painting of you, your Sun sign would represent the broad, beginning brush strokes that
make up the outline of you. The other signs make up the finer strokes of the details.
Your Moon sign, which is indicative of your subconscious or your id, is the second
most important influence on your chart. This signs personifies your emotions, instincts,
and fantasies. Because the Moon over the emotional sphere, it influences your receptivity
to others and also how others feel about you. A strong and lasting bond is usually
indicated in a relationship when the woman has her Moon in the same sign in which a man
has his Sun.
The third most significant factor in your chart is you Ascendant or Rising sign. Your
Ascendant reflects your outward demeanor and a great extent determines how the outside
world looks at you. It represents your outward personality, and when combined with your
Sun sign it shows your unique impact on the world.
The eight slightly more minor influences are the eight planets and govern as follows:
Mercury—governs mental activity, communication, intelligence, perception, reason,
memory, speaking and writing.
Venus—the planet of love affairs, pleasure, art, beauty, adornment, decoration,
social grace, and the expression of affection.
Mars—rules over your energy, boldness, your will to win, your ability to turn ideas
into action, passion, sexuality, force, ambition, desire, courage and strength.
Jupiter—governs luck, health, happiness, wealth, worldly goods, power, knowledge,
higher learning, breadth of vision, and honesty
Saturn—governs diligence, self-control, limitation, patience stability, maturity and
realism.
Uranus—relates your inner will and governs change, originality, and surprise.
Neptune—rules over mystery, illusion, imagination, dreams, visions, deception,
confusion, fraud, treachery, and pretense.
Pluto—signifies death and rebirth, and is the planet of regenerative forces,
destruction, annihilation, complete transformation, earthquakes, volcanoes, and
terrorism.
